Putting ideals into action
When it comes to movements like these, it is important to see how people take these principles and apply them in real life. Take a look at the examples below to see how people are acting to follow through in what they believe in.
Food Not Bombs is one example of an organization that upholds freegan principles. Food Not Bombs protests war and poverty, and does so by sharing free food with hungry people. Food Not Bombs is often the first to provide food and supplies to survivors of disasters, and also works to provide shelter and food for the homeless. Food Not Bombs has many groups throughout the world, and several of these groups also host Really Really Free Markets, where they give all sorts of products away for free. Food Not Bombs serves as an example of the freegan principle in which not everything has to revolve around money and earning a profit.
For more information on what activities freegans participate in, you can go to freegan.info or freecycle.org, where most freegans go to plan things like food scavenging parties. |
Squatters
At first glance it can be difficult to see how squatting in abandoned houses could benefit anybody apart from the squatters, but one New York Times article discusses how squatters could potentially help those living in the neighborhood surrounding the abandoned house. In this scenario the freegans who ended up squatting in the abandoned house helped the neighborhood by fixing up the deteriorating house, keeping thieves and drug dealers away, and by helping others on the block get homeowners' insurance (because the mansion was now occupied).

life of a freegan
This video follows the life of Daniel Tay, a freegan living in Singapore. Looking at his life it becomes clear that freegans are still able to live exceptionally well despite living off of other people's trash. Tay's life displays just how much waste is present in a major city, and he also demonstrates the principles of freeganism by giving goods to those in need for no price at all.
